Most Monrovia patients know that dentures replace missing teeth to help regain the structure and function. What many don’t know if that you can select removable or fixed dentures. The best choice is determined by a number of factors including your condition as well as personal preference. Here is a short guide to help you understand removable dentures.
How Do Removable Dentures Work?
You might be thinking how can partial dentures be removable? By breaking the denture into several components, your dentist can build dentures that you can remove.
An RPD or removable partial denture consists of six parts:
- Major connector
- Minor connector
- Direct retainer
- Indirect retainer
- Base
- Prosthetic teeth
The base of each set of removable dentures is made up of gum-colored plastic, and the teeth are connected by a metal framework.
Different Types of Removable Dentures
Removable dentures are produced depending on the position of missing teeth. These are divided into four classes:
- Bilateral free ended: Some or all teeth on both sides of the top or bottom missing with no teeth in back of the area.
- Unilateral free ended: Some or all teeth on one side of the top or bottom missing with no teeth in back of the area.
- Unilateral bounded: Missing teeth in the middle of one side, prosthetic teeth anchored to surrounding teeth.
- Bilateral bounded: Missing teeth on one side that extend beyond the middle of the arch, to the central incisors.
The only difference between these styles is their location, which determines how they are supported.
The Advantages of Removable Dentures
At first, it is difficult to get used to wearing removable partial dentures, and you may require some practice to place the dentures properly in the mouth. But once you do there are some definite advantages such as:
- Easier adjustments if needed.
- Ability to remove if food gets stuck.
- Removing dentures when not using them.
With removable dentures, you can make the choice of whether or not to keep them in or take them out rather than having them permanently attached.
Caring for Partial Dentures
Partial dentures need to be cleaned differently than your natural teeth and should always be removed before brushing or flossing. Partial dentures are designed to protect your remaining natural teeth, but you should also take extra steps to ensure proper oral hygiene in order to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
